Aleksandra, you’ve made a name for yourself by helping businesses solve strategic problems through innovative thinking with no-code solutions. Could you tell us about one of your most memorable projects in which you employed no-code tools and discuss the impact it had on the client’s business?

I would definitely mention a platform for founders to set up and manage their startups. This included aspects such as incorporation, cap table management, stock issuance, corporate governance, and compliance, all consolidated into a single platform based in Silicon Valley. I joined the team as the head of growth and was responsible for planning and executing the growth strategy. The objective was simple – to present data to investors that would convince them of the platform’s market fit. This was achieved through the use of a set of no-code tools. We primarily focused on optimising the onboarding process for new customers using no-code solutions.

The no-code development movement has grown significantly in recent years, enabling non-technical individuals to create sophisticated applications. How do you foresee the future of no-code development, particularly in areas such as business analytics and customer engagement?

The future of no-code development is set to revolutionise the software industry, enabling companies to operate more intelligently, rapidly, and efficiently. The growing popularity of no-code platforms suggests that we can anticipate new trends in 2023 that will shape this field’s future. One key trend is the increased adoption of no-code platforms by large enterprises. These platforms offer numerous benefits such as reduced development costs, quicker time-to-market, and greater agility, making them appealing to large corporations. Another trend is the move towards providing more advanced capabilities on no-code platforms. This will enable users to construct complex applications with sophisticated workflows, integrations, and management features. The integration of no-code and low-code with traditional development is another trend to keep an eye on in 2023. This amalgamation will provide a more streamlined and efficient approach to software development.

Considering your vast experience, what would you say are the primary challenges when implementing no-code solutions in organisations, and how do you overcome them?

Implementing no-code solutions in organisations can present several challenges. One of the most common obstacles is the lack of customisation. While no-code platforms provide a fast way to build applications using pre-built components and templates, they might not deliver the level of customisation needed for a specific business or use case. This limitation can result in apps that are generic or inconsistent with a company’s branding. Another significant challenge is dealing with integration and compatibility issues between the no-code platform and existing systems or third-party services. No-code platforms generally support some level of integration with popular tools and services, but given the immense variety of services out there, there can be gaps in compatibility. Failing to address these issues can lead to limitations in the application’s functionality or even expose vulnerabilities. Scalability is another concern with no-code solutions. While no-code platforms are evolving to accommodate high performance and scalability, which are critical requirements for production-ready applications, there is still a question of whether a no-code app can cope with novel ideas and features in the forthcoming years. Security and compliance are also significant challenges. No-code and low-code approaches are prone to credential misuse and privilege exploitation, and there is a risk of data exposure and leakage due to improper data handling methods and poor application logic that interacts with data stores. Lastly, there is a challenge related to the learning curve and technical competency required to effectively use no-code tools. Despite the promise of “no training required,” the reality is that individual experience and education can greatly impact the successful implementation and use of a no-code platform. Despite these challenges, no-code solutions are revolutionising the software industry, making application development accessible to a broader range of workers and enabling companies to do things more intelligently, rapidly, and efficiently. They also help organisations address IT skills shortages and allow IT professionals to focus on priority projects. However, the key to successful implementation lies in selecting the right toolset and involving security and identity teams in the application design process wherever possible.

What are some of the common misconceptions you’ve encountered about no-code development, and how do you address these?

There are several misconceptions about no-code development that I’ve encountered.
    • 1. No-code is for simple use-cases only**: This is a common misconception, but in reality, no-code platforms can deliver powerful applications with complex business logic.
    • 2. No-code isn’t for developers**: Contrary to this belief, no-code platforms cater to both non-developers and professional developers alike, empowering them to create and deploy applications faster and more efficiently.
    • 3. No-code creates shadow IT: No-code platforms actually minimize the need for shadow IT practices by providing employees with a toolset to solve unique business problems.
    • 4. No-code is limiting and can’t be extended: This is not true, as no-code platforms leave enough space to add customized codes on top of pre-built modules to build personalized or apps specific to requirements.
    • 5. No-code is only good for greenfield apps: No-code platforms can be used to develop a wide variety of applications, not just greenfield apps.
    • 6. No-code platforms are not secure: In reality, no-code platforms have enterprise-grade security with all security certifications in place to create business applications.
    • 7. No-code cannot scale; no-code cannot handle big data**: No-code platforms enable users to scale their pilot project to an Internet-wide deployment that supports millions of users.
    • 8. No-code platform is not for everyone**: A person does not require some technical knowledge or coding skills to use the platform. The learning curve for these platforms is generally lower compared to traditional coding approaches.
    • 9. No-code will replace developers**: No-code/low-code platforms aren’t looking to entirely eliminate the need for traditional/custom development skills. They’re largely meant to equip each member of a collaborative team, including developers and non-developers, with the necessary tools and resources they can use.
    • 10. No-code platforms are not flexible and customizable**: Contrary to popular belief, low-code platforms are not restrictive frameworks that confine developers to a predefined set of functionalities.
While these misconceptions may deter some from exploring no-code development, it’s important to remember that every tool has its pros and cons. No-code development can be a powerful tool when used correctly, and can greatly speed up the development process, allowing for rapid testing and iteration.
